Always (try) to Build, DON’T BUY!

WHY YOU SHOULD BUILD A NEW HOUSE AND NOT JUST BUY!

Before I write all about why you should choose an O’Brien Custom Home, let’s start at the real beginning – why you should BUILD and not buy a home whenever possible. Quick caveat – let’s all recognize that there are legitimate considerations where buying an existing home may better serve your family’s needs. Maybe you need a quicker timeframe, maybe it’s location, maybe it’s financial, or maybe something else altogether. But, if at all possible, we feel firmly building is the Better option for 3 main reasons – value, choice, and performance.

VALUE – the MOST significant point to always remember is that you are spending HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of YOUR dollars regardless of whether you buy or build. It is acclaimed to be the largest purchase of your life. So, in turn, shouldn’t it also give you the biggest value ever?!

How does the saying go – “for that kind of money, I should get anything I want”. YES! Yes, we absolutely agree that you should!

Only Building gives you that maximum value for the price you are paying. Yes, you might get a great deal buying a house, but you aren’t really getting the maximum value because for similar money you are settling on choice. Speaking of…

CHOICE – Too often, we get houses the same way we buy clothes. All too happy just to accept what we are given. You pay for clothing that you fit into and NOT for something that is fitted for you, and you pick from limited options in color, style, and/or materials.

Buying a house like you buy clothes means accepting what you are given. Buying means a house that is good enough to fit your family then settling for limited choices on color, style, and materials. Building means creating a house that fits your family with complete freedom of choice. We firmly believe your money is Better spent on a house that fits you and not on a house that you fit into.

PERFORMANCE – Buying vs building is a similar decision to getting a new car or a used car. Buying, like a used car, may be a cheaper price to start, but the cost of remodeling, repairs, and extended maintenance may quickly outweigh the cost of something new. Used cars carry a risk because you don’t know how well it was taken care of. People buy new Lexus and Toyotas because they are frequently listed as the most reliable brands. But Building a house is even higher than that because you WATCH it being built AND you can choose nearly any of the parts!

Every purchase we all make today is a consideration of value, choice, and performance. But for the extreme cost to get a house should we really use the same thinking we put into clothes, cars, and other things?

It just does not apply well. You don’t wear the same clothes every day, but you use the same house every day. You might use your car every day, but your family doesn’t live in your car.

What if your clothes or your car cost over $300,000! Oh, and add in annual property taxes and 30 years or so of financing with interest. How high would your expectations be for a $300,000 shirt, a $300,000 wedding dress, or a $300,000 car that you had to wear every day or live in?

That’s why we believe in Building – Not Buying. For the price you pay, you should get your house, your way. Built fresh to order and made to fit you and your family. If you need to buy – please buy. If you cannot build now, we hope you can be patient and save until you can.
